Unattended Child Policy

Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library - Unattended Child Policy

POLICY STATEMENT:

The Sekula Memorial Library is a vital, friendly, comfortable center that strives to provide for the cultural, informational, and recreational needs of our community. The Library welcomes children into its facilities and wants a safe and secure environment for children who use the Library. We ask each parent to join us in protecting the children of our community by following the Unattended Child Policy. The following children's policy has been adopted by the Sekula Memorial Library Advisory Board to insure that children will be properly supervised in the Library.

  • A responsible adult is defined as a parent/guardian, teacher, or assigned child-care giver over the age of 18.

  • An unattended child is defined as a child under the age of 12 years old who is in the Library not accompanied by a responsible adult.

  • Children age 8 and under, must be accompanied by an adult at all times within the Children’s Department.

  • Patrons over the age of 17 may not loiter/linger within the Children’s Department; adults must be accompanying a child.

  • GUIDELINES:

  • The responsible adult who brought the children to the library is responsible for the care and safety of those children at all times. This policy affirms that the library staff does not assume responsibility for unattended children.

  • Children under the age of 8 may not be left unattended for any length of time. This includes children participating in Library-sponsored programs. The responsible adult must remain in the building during the program, and must immediately pick up the child when the program ends. If a Library staff member becomes aware of an unattended child in the Library, reasonable measures will be taken to locate the adult. If this cannot be done, the police will be informed. An incident report will be filed in the Library.

  • School age children, ages 8 and up, may utilize the Children’s Department independently of their parent/guardian as long as their conduct is acceptable in a library setting; however, parent/guardian must remain in the building at all times. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Parents/police will be called depending on severity of the conduct.

  • Any child 17 or younger found unattended at closing will be referred to the Police Department; this is to ensure the safety of your child.

  • Policy Adopted by the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library Advisory Board on 04/08/2015.
